I belong in the movie Best in Show

My mom is so boring. She's on her computer all the time.

If you're a dog person (or a dog geek, as I call myself) or a fan of Christopher Guest, you know the movie Best in Show. Hagrid and I star in our own version of Best in Show every single day.

This week's Best in Show moments so far:

Me: "Drop it! Drop it! Drop it!"
Hagrid the Shark: [scarfs down the contraband quicker than I can pry his maw open]

Me: [inspecting his poop for the candy wrapper he swallowed] "Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, God... oops, I mean, good boy, Hagrid!"
Hagrid: [stares at me waiting for his treat]

Me: "Find it!"
Hagrid: [sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff... SIT]
Me: "GOOD boy!" [My genius dog can find a q-tip scented with anise or birch oil hidden inside a metal tin hidden in a search area in under 3 minutes]
Hagrid: [wolfs down his treat and wants more right away]

In the last few weeks, we've been training in nosework class to teach Hagrid how to alert in the ABSENCE of odor. In nosework speak, this is called "clearing a search area." (We train with the most elite behavior scientist in our area. Two summers ago, Hagrid was invited to a speaking engagement at the New England Innocence Project to demonstrate his amazing scent detection capabilities.)

My dog is a GENIUS. Any day now, we'll be getting that call for us star in the sequel to Best in Show.

Hurray! Mom came home early today and took me outside in the sun.

  1. Wow! Your Hagrid is a genius. You are serious about nose homework. Even though I am not familiar with the show, I love the chosen excerpts to capture the behind-the-scenes moments of the talented and famous! Under 3 minutes, he can locate the hidden anise-scented qtip! The police department may need him. He is so happy to
    see you in that picture.

    1. Ha, thanks for indulging the NEUROTIC Best-in-Show dog mom in me! Nosework uses the same foundational training as police scent detection dogs. The main difference in recreational nosework is the use of essential oils of birch, anise, and clover instead of marijauna, explosives, humans, etc. So much fun! I love that the dog gets to be a dog in this sport.

  2. OMG I LOVE "BEST IN SHOW"!

I also love hearing about your amazing dog! The animal-human bond is the best. Even though I have a human child now, my dogs will also always be "my babies." :)

  4. ...and to think I was pretty smug about my dogs staying out of the trash. I do love a good conversation between a dog and its human! Hagrid (love the name) is brilliant!

  5. Hagrid is such an imp! He's too smart for his own good. I would love it if Christopher Guest called you up, because it would be both amazing and hysterical. I'd love it. And I agree, Hagrid is so cute (he knows it, right?)

  6. Best in Show is THE BEST!!!!! My dog is a rat terrier-chihuahua mix we got at the shelter. He's not winning any beauty or behavior contests, but we love him.

  7. Hagrid is a cute, cute, cute dog. He looks just like my mom's dog, Boo. I don't think she is smart enough to do any tricks though or search for drugs.
